I have been doing this for twelve years and it took eight to pay
Two novels, about ninety essays, one abandoned book that took two years and taught me more than either of the finished ones.
I published my first essay in 2013 and my first novel in 2019. Between those two dates I wrote a book that does not exist, which took two years and is the reason the ones that do exist work at all.
Everything I have published is free to read here, including the early pieces I would now write differently. Taking them down would be tidier and slightly dishonest, so they stay, with a note at the top where I have changed my mind.
I take two or three commissions a quarter and the rates are published. I do not take on spec work, I do not do contra deals, and I have never once been persuaded that exposure is a form of payment.
